Weather desk context: Friday brings a strong morning-thunderstorm risk to Sapporo, afternoon showers to Sendai and Tokyo, periods of rain to Niigata and morning showers to Kanazawa. Representative highs are Sapporo 24°C, Sendai 29°C, Tokyo 35°C, Niigata 26°C, Kanazawa 32°C, Nagoya 38°C, Osaka 37°C, Hiroshima 36°C, Fukuoka 36°C, Kumamoto 36°C and Naha 33°C. Saturday may bring a drenching afternoon thunderstorm to Sapporo, morning showers to Sendai, a spot morning thunderstorm to Tokyo, morning rain and thunder to Kanazawa and a spot afternoon thunderstorm to Naha. Sunday improves in Sapporo but carries afternoon thunderstorm or shower risks in Sendai, Tokyo, Kanazawa and Nagoya, with a morning thunderstorm possible in Niigata. Heat intensifies through the weekend: Nagoya may reach 39°C Saturday and 40°C Sunday, while Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Kumamoto may reach 37–39°C.
