Pitch competitions compress time with almost comic severity. In a few minutes, a founder must explain why a problem hurts, why this company can solve it, whether customers will pay, whether the technology can be defended and whether the business can cross borders. Behind the ten companies headed for the Kyushu regional stage are fields that resist easy summaries: sleep medicine, machining, dialysis, cattle breeding, auto-body repair and the inheritance of food companies.
Pegasus Tech Ventures Japan announced the finalists on August 21. Ten companies survived document screening from approximately 250 applicants. They are scheduled to pitch and answer questions in Japanese at Kumamoto Castle Hall’s main hall from 1 to 5 p.m. on October 6. The organizer expects a combined in-person and online audience of more than 2,000 and says the regional winner will advance to the November Grand Finale in San Francisco, where it advertises a $1 million investment prize.

Reading bodies without breaking the system
ACCELStars, Farmers Support and Genial Light share a design instinct: observe a living system continuously without restraining it or opening it.
ACCELStars grew from University of Tokyo sleep research. Its ambition reaches beyond wellness advice. The company wants changes in sleep to function as digital biomarkers relevant to psychiatric, neurodegenerative and developmental disorders, linking everyday measurement with prevention, diagnosis and drug or device development. It raised ¥1.09 billion in a Series A round in 2024 and also markets SLEEP COMPASS to employers, insurers and municipalities.
Kagoshima-based Farmers Support watches cattle. MOOVIE uses camera images and AI to alert farmers to signs of calving and estrus. With no collar or sensor attached to the animal, it avoids device loss and attachment stress. The company says its calving model looks for visible signs such as the amniotic sac, a sharply raised tail and a calf’s hooves, typically sending notice about an hour before birth. The value is not that “AI is used.” It is that farmers gain an alternative between exhausting night checks and a missed birth.
Genial Light places optics outside a sealed dialysis circuit to monitor the blood inside it. In medicine, keeping the tube closed is itself a safety property. Commercial success therefore depends on more than sensitivity: compact integration, repeatability, clinical evidence, regulation and compatibility with existing equipment all matter.
Moving expert judgment into software
ARUM, A Star Quantum and Arsaga Partners are attempting to make decisions buried inside organizations more computable.
ARUM’s ARUMCODE reads 3D CAD data and automates tool selection, machining conditions, sequencing and the creation of numerical-control programs, estimates and work instructions. In Japan’s small factories, the bottleneck is often not the absence of a machine but the dwindling number of people who know how to make it run. Encoding that judgment can support high-mix production and unattended nights. The defensible part is how safely the system handles exceptions encountered on a real shop floor.
A Star Quantum attacks combinatorial problems in maintenance, staffing, logistics and production. The word “quantum” attracts attention, but customers buy a better plan delivered faster—not quantum mechanics itself. The company’s published work includes maintenance optimization for JAL Engineering. Its practical strategy combines mathematical optimization, AI and fast databases rather than relying on one computing method.
Arsaga offers an organization rather than a single narrow product: consulting through implementation, generative AI and continuing operation. It had 401 employees at the end of July 2026 and offices in Fukuoka, Kagoshima and two Kumamoto locations. Its pitch challenge is to show how a service business can scale beyond the linear addition of engineers, using reusable technology and AI while preserving delivery quality.
Investors are not really asking, “Do you use AI or quantum computing?” They are asking whether the company can solve an urgent customer problem with evidence, repeatability and an economic advantage.
Rebuilding old industries as networks
find, Ikeuchi and Manpuku Holdings are not primarily selling inventions from a laboratory. They are joining fragmented operations into networks.
Lost property appears trivial until railway operators, malls, airports and police each hold separate records and staffs repeat identification and return work. Founded in 2021, find digitizes registration, matching, communication, return and police coordination. Its long-term asset is not merely a search interface. It is the network effect created when many facilities describe and exchange items in compatible data.
Ikeuchi reorganizes auto-body work through directly operated stores, digital estimating and accumulated repair data. Its current website says the chain has 35 stores and repairs more than 39,000 vehicles annually. Standardizing price, workflow, marketing and capacity does not eliminate craft skill; it allows technicians to spend more time using it.
Manpuku Holdings acquires food companies without defining resale as the goal. The group has inherited businesses in bento, meat, seafood, sushi and yakiniku, including part of Kumamoto’s Otsuka Group in 2023. It seeks growth through shared procurement, distribution, people and sales. With 2,429 consolidated employees as of April 2026, the accumulation of small succession deals has already become a large employment platform.
Piezo Sonic’s second base in Kumamoto
Piezo Sonic develops ultrasonic motors that turn vibration from piezoelectric elements into rotational force. The company says the design uses neither coils nor magnets, making it a candidate for equipment that must avoid strong magnetic interference. It also develops compact autonomous mobile robots.
The company is headquartered in Tokyo and maintains a base inside Kanda Kogyo’s Yatsushiro factory in Kumamoto Prefecture. Global expansion will require evidence beyond a demonstration: rain, gravel, gradients, safe operation near people, remote maintenance and production cost. Those are field questions, not merely pitch-deck questions.
Why Kumamoto?
Kumamoto brings together potential test beds in agriculture, food, healthcare and manufacturing. The question is whether the region can convert that industrial base into sustained trials, customers and investment for young companies.
In June 2025, a coalition led by Kumamoto Prefecture and Kumamoto City was selected as a “NEXT Global Hub City” in the national government’s second group of startup-ecosystem hubs. Its industry-academia-government-finance consortium is intended to support collaboration with established companies, overseas growth and fundraising. Kumamoto City targets ¥10 billion in funding raised by supported startups through fiscal 2029 while openly acknowledging the limited number of locally rooted investment institutions.
The semiconductor concentration around JASM, TSMC, Sony and suppliers is moving talent, housing, transportation and research. Yet attracting a giant factory and generating locally rooted startups are not the same achievement. The World Cup’s potential value is to put international investors and regional operating problems in the same room.
2017 — The organizer says Startup World Cup begins.

August 7, 2026 — Kumamoto City announces the earthquake-related postponement.
August 21, 2026 — The organizer announces ten finalists selected from roughly 250 applicants.

November 2026 — The organizer schedules the Grand Finale in San Francisco.
What the judges are really choosing
These companies cannot be compared by technological spectacle alone. Medical devices carry heavy regulatory and clinical burdens. DX services can generate revenue earlier but become labor-intensive. Hardware can be difficult to copy but demands manufacturing capital and service networks. Business succession is socially urgent but integration takes years.
- Pain: How large and urgent is the customer’s present loss or danger?
- Evidence: Can a third party verify accuracy, time, cost, revenue and retention?
- Defensibility: Is protection built from data, regulation, networks and field knowledge as well as patents?
- Scale: Can the business expand without adding founders or custom labor in equal proportion?
- Global relevance: Does a Japanese entry point lead to a problem shared by other countries?
Labor scarcity runs beneath all ten companies. Poor sleep reduces productivity; machinists and body-repair technicians are aging; farmers cannot watch barns all night; dialysis teams must preserve safety; food companies need successors. Whatever company wins, the slate reflects a shared recognition: a shrinking workforce cannot maintain the same economy in the same way.
Beside the castle, a contest about continuity
Kumamoto Castle has survived cycles of destruction and reconstruction. The pitches beside it are not all stories of discarding the old. They ask how to carry forward a cattle farmer’s observation, a machinist’s decisions, a dialysis technician’s vigilance, a food company’s taste and a body worker’s hands.
Pitch events are often narrated through prize money. More consequential than the $1 million is what happens after the lights: who becomes a customer, a research partner, a distributor or the host of a first overseas office. Only one company receives the ticket to San Francisco. The real test of Kumamoto’s ecosystem is whether the other nine leave with something useful too.
