A founder’s second opening · 1991 → 2026

Brad Bartz is building Japan.co.jp for the AI newsroom era.

The founder’s first chapter helped put searchable information, publishing communities and internet access online in Japan. The new chapter applies human editorial judgment and AI-assisted production to an independent, bilingual publication about Japan.

This is not a nostalgia project. It is a working newsroom built on an unusually long operating memory—and designed to turn a memorable domain, a growing archive and a disciplined production system into a durable media business.

The founder behind the domain

A builder across BBS, search, PPP, web publishing and AI-assisted media.

Brad Bartz is an American entrepreneur and publisher whose work in Japan spans three computing eras: the pre-web online world, the commercial internet and today’s generative-AI production environment.

Japan.co.jp’s own archive documents the operating story beginning with IAC Online BBS in 1991, searchable publishing experiments such as Metabook, internet-access partnerships in the PPP era, web production, publishing and the hard work of rebuilding through the late 1990s. The story is preserved through timelines, advertisements, press artifacts and a first-person book project—not reduced to a few polished résumé lines.

Why the history matters now

Founders building with AI face an old problem in a new form: technology can lower the cost of creation, but it cannot choose the mission, earn trust, define standards or persist through the unglamorous correction loop. Bartz’s operating history is relevant because Japan.co.jp has already crossed several platform shifts—and survived long enough to build again.

The organizing idea is simple: use machines for leverage, keep people responsible for judgment, and turn every day’s work into an asset that remains useful tomorrow.

The investment case, without invented numbers

What could make Japan.co.jp valuable is the system—not an unsupported vanity metric.

01

A memorable Japan identity

Japan.co.jp is a clear, direct brand for reporting, explaining and discovering Japan. The name can support news, markets, regions, culture and specialist products without requiring a new identity for every vertical.

BRAND + DIRECT DISTRIBUTION
02

AI-native operating leverage

AI assists with research organization, story structure, translation, HTML and editorial illustration. Human direction remains responsible for selection, standards, sourcing, placement and correction.

SMALL TEAM + REPEATABLE WORKFLOW
03

A compounding content base

Daily editions create immediacy. Reports, regional guides, art and historical archives create long-lived discovery. Each useful page can strengthen the value of the publication’s larger map.

DAILY ATTENTION + EVERGREEN DEPTH
04

A bilingual information bridge

Japan generates globally important stories in business, technology, policy, science, travel and culture. Publishing in Japanese and English creates room for domestic context and international reach.
