Sankei Real Estate backs takeover bid that could end its TSE listing
Sankei Real Estate Investment Corporation has endorsed a tender offer by City Index Fifth. The Tokyo Stock Exchange placed the REIT under supervision because the transaction may lead to delisting, making the deal a notable test of private-market pressure on listed Japanese property vehicles.

TSE expands Asia Startup Hub to 23 companies across 10 markets
Tokyo Stock Exchange selected 23 companies for its 2026 Asia Startup Hub, including seven new companies from South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Mongolia. The program is intended to help Asian startups expand in Japan and treat a future TSE IPO as one possible outcome.

Mammalian cells are found to make and store elemental sulfur S8
A Tohoku University-led team reports that mammalian cells and tissues produce cyclo-octasulfur, S8, previously studied mainly in microbes, plants and fungi. S8 accumulated especially in lipid droplets, and elevated levels were also observed in human breast-cancer tissue; the work was published in Science.

Tohoku team makes nanoporous beta-SiC at just 800°C
Researchers used liquid-metal dealloying to synthesize crystalline nanoporous beta-silicon carbide with an interconnected nanoplate structure at 1073 K, or 800°C—far below conventional SiC synthesis temperatures. The method could open a new processing route for covalent ceramics.

Screen of 6,080 compounds finds lead for suppressing aldosterone production
A Tohoku University-led group identified “compound 35” from a screen of 6,080 compounds. In cultured cells carrying disease-related mutations, it reduced expression of the aldosterone-producing enzyme CYP11B2 and lowered hormone secretion; animal and human testing is still required.

Tokyo launches household cooking-oil collection drive for SAF
Tokyo is expanding collection of used household cooking oil from supermarkets, condominiums and shopping districts for reuse in sustainable aviation fuel and other products. An October campaign at five Life supermarkets will award Tokyo app points to participants.

‘Team Inbanuma’ begins emergency drainage and levee restoration
After Typhoon No. 25 caused levee breaches and prolonged flooding around Lake Inba, the national government, Chiba Prefecture and Japan Water Agency formed Team Inbanuma. The joint operation combines emergency pumping, lowering the lake level and accelerated temporary repairs to breached levees.

New invasive fire-ant species found in Japan for first time at Kobe Port
Japan’s Environment Ministry confirmed Solenopsis aurea at Kobe Port, the first domestic record of the emergency-designated invasive ant. Surveys found about 20,000 workers, 500 winged ants, roughly 20 wingless queens and many larvae around a container yard, prompting continued eradication work.

Japan takes baseball silver as South Korea wins fifth straight Asian Games title
South Korea defeated Japan 3–1 in the Aichi-Nagoya baseball final in Toyohashi, extending its Asian Games championship streak to five. Japan had beaten Korea 5–0 in the Super Round but could not repeat that result in the gold-medal game.

Hayato Katsuki wins first Asian Games marathon race-walk gold
Japan’s Hayato Katsuki won the inaugural Asian Games men’s marathon race walk in 3:03:36, while compatriot Motofumi Suwa took bronze in 3:08:57. The new event gave Japan two places on the first podium in Asian Games history.

Albert Marquet retrospective opens in Japan for first time in decades
SOMPO Museum of Art has opened an Albert Marquet retrospective running through December 13. The show revisits the Fauvist-associated painter’s muted grays, waterside landscapes and close observation in what Japanese museum coverage describes as the country’s first substantial Marquet retrospective in about 35 years.

Sumo Museum marks 100 years since Yokozuna Chiyonoyama’s birth
The Sumo Museum is presenting an exhibition on 41st yokozuna Chiyonoyama, born in Hokkaido in 1926. The show examines his role in rebuilding sumo’s popularity after World War II and the wrestlers who followed through his stable lineage, running through December 17.
