Japan Market Desk: Nikkei Reclaims 70,000 as AI Strength Meets 3% JGBs

Tokyo stocks extended their advance as AI and semiconductor shares were joined by broader domestic buying, pushing the Nikkei back above 70,000 at the close, while a weaker yen and 3%-plus JGB yields kept the cost-of-money story firmly in view before the next open.

02 What Moved Tokyo

Tokyo opened only slightly higher after Monday’s surge, then accelerated in the afternoon. The Nikkei 225 finished at 70,683.98, up 737.12 points or 1.05%, while TOPIX rose 0.92% to 4,183.56. Market breadth was healthier than the headline alone suggests, with advancing shares comfortably outnumbering decliners.

AI and semiconductor names remained central, but the gains were not confined to them. Public closing data showed real estate, banking and textiles among the stronger groups, while lower oil helped the broader risk tone. A weak yen supported exporters’ translated earnings, but Tuesday was not simply a currency trade: higher domestic yields also supported financials, and buying broadened beyond the highest-weight chip names.

03 Today’s Market Mover

Confidence: High

Advantest / アドバンテスト (6857)

¥41,850 · +3.85%

Advantest closed Oct. 6 at ¥41,850, up 3.85%, taking its market capitalization to roughly ¥30.3 trillion. The stock has surged across several sessions as investors continue to price global AI infrastructure spending into semiconductor-test demand.

The move matters beyond one company. U.S. AI leaders remain near records, and Tokyo buying spread into TDK, Taiyo Yuden, Fujikura and other electronics and data-center-linked names. When these high-weight stocks lead, the Nikkei can look stronger than the broader market—so Advantest remains a useful lens on both genuine AI demand and index concentration risk.

Why it matters

Semiconductor testing is one of Tokyo’s most direct expressions of global AI capital spending. Advantest’s index weight makes it a measure of both genuine strength and concentration.

04 Sector Pulse

Leading
Semiconductors and electronics: Advantest, TDK, Taiyo Yuden and Fujikura.
Broader strength
Real estate, banks and textiles; TOPIX rose 0.92%.
Lagging
SoftBank Group fell more than 3%; even AI-linked names were selective.
Macro
Lower oil helps an importing economy; 3% JGB yields lift the cost of capital.

05 Yen Watch

USD/JPY moved back above 158 during the Tokyo afternoon. It was around 158.10–158.20 at 17:00 JST, and Japan.co.jp’s 08:58 JST check on Oct. 7 showed 158.28. The yen therefore remained weak well after the cash-equity close.

That level still helps the translated earnings of exporters in autos, machinery and electronics. It also raises the yen cost of imported energy, food and raw materials for households and smaller businesses. A move closer to 160 would quickly bring Ministry of Finance intervention warnings back into focus.

06 Rates / JGB Watch

The 10-year JGB yield ended Oct. 6 around 3.087%. The Ministry of Finance’s new 10-year auction carried a 3.1% coupon; the weighted-average accepted yield was 3.101% and the yield at the lowest accepted price was 3.103%. Three-percent government borrowing is no longer a passing market curiosity.

Higher yields can help banks and insurers through better lending and investment spreads, while creating a tougher discount-rate environment for real estate and richly valued growth shares. Tuesday’s market therefore combined two powerful stories: AI-led earnings optimism and a materially higher domestic cost of capital.

07 Global Handoff

After Tokyo closed, Europe strengthened. The STOXX 600 gained 0.5% as lower sovereign yields and softer oil improved risk appetite. Wall Street then extended the handoff: the S&P 500 gained 0.6% to a record 7,818.93, the Nasdaq rose 0.45% to a record 27,599.79 and the Dow added 0.5%.

For Tokyo, that is a constructive overnight backdrop. AI risk appetite remained intact in the U.S., while oil and Treasury yields eased from recent extremes. But the Nikkei has already reclaimed 70,000, so the next session will test whether investors chase the global rally or use fresh strength to take profits.

08 Policy / BOJ Watch

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda told the national securities industry meeting on Oct. 6 that underlying inflation is approaching 2%, while reiterating that the BOJ will continue raising the policy rate and adjust the degree of monetary accommodation in line with the economy and prices.

That makes the coexistence of rising equities and rising yields the central policy-market question. Strong earnings can absorb a higher discount rate; persistently higher long yields eventually reach real estate, business investment, mortgages and the government’s own interest bill.

09 Publisher’s Market Note

Seventy thousand makes the headline. The number I keep coming back to is three percent.

On the same day that Advantest’s market value moved above ¥30 trillion on AI enthusiasm, Japan sold a new 10-year government bond with a 3.1% coupon. A few years ago, seeing those two facts together would have seemed improbable. Japan’s new market story is not only growth, and it is not only normalization. It is whether both can coexist.
