The fifth station is where many visitors expect the mountain journey to begin. A road, a bus stop and a car park can make it feel like a secure threshold between ordinary travel and climbing. The debris reported at Mount Fuji’s Fujinomiya fifth station on September 9 exposed the weakness of that distinction: the access infrastructure is part of the mountain landscape, too.
TV Asahi, citing Shizuoka Prefecture’s Fuji Civil Engineering Office, reported that officials received word around midnight that debris had entered the car park and buried three vehicles. No one was inside them, and no human casualties had been confirmed when the report was published that afternoon. The road was obstructed and no restoration timetable was then available.[1]
For readers planning a September 12 visit, a second development is decisive. The official climbing website says the 2026 season has ended. The weather-related disruption and the seasonal closure are separate facts. A road reopening would not reopen the summit trails.[2]
First, identify which side of Fuji
Fujinomiya fifth station is on the Shizuoka side, at about 2,400 metres, and is reached by the Fuji Skyline. The Fuji Subaru Line serves a different fifth station on the Yamanashi side, associated with the Yoshida route. Treating the two roads as interchangeable can send a traveller to the wrong authority or create a false impression about the extent of damage.[4]
A September 8 notice on the official climbing website records that the Subaru Line closed along its entire length at 8:50 p.m. because of heavy rain. At the time, reopening was expected no earlier than September 10 and depended on safety checks. That notice documents the closure; its projected date does not establish that reopening occurred.[5]
This is why “Is Mount Fuji open?” is an insufficient travel question. Access roads, walking trails and transport services have separate operating conditions. Even the end of seasonal private-car restrictions says nothing by itself about whether a rain closure has been lifted. Each part of a journey needs to work, including the return.
The ground remembers the rain
The Japan Meteorological Agency’s Soil Water Index represents water stored in the ground using a model. It helps assess sediment-disaster risk because slope failures and debris flows depend on earlier rainfall as well as what is falling now. The sky can improve while the effects of accumulated water remain relevant.[7]
The index is not an inspection of a particular slope. JMA explains that its calculation does not individually incorporate each hillside’s geology or vegetation, and is not designed to represent the deep underground conditions behind deep-seated collapses or large landslides. It cannot establish the precise mechanism of the Fujinomiya incident.[7]
For a visitor, the practical implication is to look beyond a rain icon. Weather forecasts, sediment-risk information and road-manager decisions answer different questions. JMA’s Kikikuru maps offer risk information, but they are not permission to enter a closed road or a substitute for an inspection of damaged infrastructure.[12]
A patrol, not a patch of blue sky
Shizuoka’s Fuji Skyline rain-closure leaflet describes what happens when access is suspended: shuttle buses and taxis between the fifth-station and Mizugatsuka parking areas do not operate. Restrictions are lifted after the rain subsides and a road patrol confirms safety. The prefecture explicitly warns that closure can last a long time.[6]
That sequence explains why removing visible debris and restoring public access are different milestones. A traveller watching the weather from below cannot make the road authority’s assessment. Nor does a road that looks passable on foot become a legitimate workaround for a closure.
The disruption also reaches beyond climbers. An access road supports transport workers, mountain businesses and maintenance operations. Its availability is part of the system that allows visitors to arrive and leave. A timetable consulted before a storm should not be treated as a promise that the same service will carry someone home afterwards.
A longer history below the slopes
Fuji’s sediment hazards have a history extending far beyond this week’s access problems. The national government’s Fuji Sabo Office describes material from the Osawa collapse and other southwestern channels moving during rain or snowmelt, with consequences reaching downstream settlements and waterways. Sabo is the work of preventing and reducing sediment disasters.[8]
The office’s account of 1972 records major debris flows involving heavy rain, snowmelt and accumulated material. Muddy flows carried sediment through the Urui River to Tagonoura Port. Repeated events that year damaged infrastructure including roads, bridges and water facilities.[9]
This is regional history, not a diagnosis of the September 9 car-park incident. Osawa and the Fujinomiya access point must not be collapsed into a single location or assumed to have the same failure mechanism. The older events explain why sediment management matters around Fuji; they do not establish the scale or cause of the latest damage.
The historical record also notes flows outside the familiar typhoon and rainy-season windows, including periods of snowmelt. For residents below the mountain, sediment risk is therefore not simply a seasonal inconvenience for tourists. It is part of maintaining places to live, farm, work and travel.[9]
Protection requires continuing maintenance
At the Osawa alluvial fan, the Fuji Sabo Office describes structures that guide flows into space intended to retain sediment, together with settling basins and downstream channel works. It also removes accumulated material to preserve storage capacity. The system requires maintenance after construction.[10]
That is a useful perspective on recovery after heavy rain. Restoring a visible surface is only part of protecting its function. Retaining room for sediment and checking infrastructure are continuing tasks. Their success may be less conspicuous than a blocked road, yet they are part of what makes ordinary movement possible.
September changes the support system
Shizuoka says its three summit routes entered winter closure at 5 p.m. on September 10. Its updated notice treats the Fujinomiya fifth-to-sixth-station section separately, listing that short section as passable, while the route above the sixth station is closed. This does not establish current access to the fifth-station car park after the rain.[3]
The official climbing site lists the Yoshida, Subashiri and Gotemba routes as closed from the fifth station to the summit, Fujinomiya from the sixth station upwards, and the summit crater circuit as closed. For this edition, the mountain should not be described as still in its normal summer climbing season.[2]
Off-season guidance explains the change behind the calendar: huts and first-aid facilities cease normal seasonal operations, trail maintenance and communications differ from summer, and bad weather can make rescue difficult. The period around closure also provides a limited opportunity for repairs and work preparing facilities for the following year.[11]
Visitors should therefore check the latest road-manager notice and the transport operator’s service information, obey closures and change plans when the required access is unavailable. The damaged car park is not a sightseeing destination. Giving recovery crews room to work is part of responsible travel in a community dealing with the aftermath of rain.
Mount Fuji’s familiar outline can make the mountain appear constant. The conditions that allow people to approach it are not. Roads, slopes, services and seasonal support all have their own limits—and the end of a downpour is not the end of the decisions needed to keep people safe.
