Before tatami became a room, it was an object. It was carried onto a wooden floor, placed beneath the person who would sit or sleep, then stacked when its work was done. That first life survives in the name: tatami is traced to tatamu, to fold or pile. Sawabe Tatami, a workshop in Kyoto’s Nishikyo Ward, will launch a portable-mat brand called Agura on July 30. It is presented as an attempt to take tatami out of the washitsu and into yoga, meditation, camping and overnight stays in cars. Across thirteen centuries, however, the outward journey bends back toward tatami’s origin.

The brand has two product families. A long natural-rush yoga mat is 3 millimeters thick and weighs about one kilogram. It does not fold; it rolls. The “Fuwari Tatami” range adds urethane cushioning and comes in three 9-millimeter-thick sizes: one flat, one folding in half and one folding into four. The company offers natural igusa rush surfaces and plans paper-based “washi tatami” surfaces beginning in black.

These are not conventional architectural mats made smaller. Standard tatami flooring consists of a woven surface, a substantial core and protected long edges, commonly reaching 5 to 6 centimeters in thickness. AGURA is 3 or 9 millimeters thick, with urethane inside its cushioned range. It transfers the tactile surface and workshop skills of cutting, tensioning, sewing and finishing into a different class of object—one designed around the body, a car interior and the dimensions of storage.

Four footprints and two ways to carry them

The headline “folding portable tatami” conceals useful distinctions. The yoga model is a single layer measuring 660 by 1,880 millimeters and 3 millimeters thick. It rolls for transport and sells for ¥14,300 including tax. Sawabe says the firmness of rush limits sinking and supports balance poses. It has not published an AGURA-specific coefficient of friction, a wet-slip test, bending-cycle endurance or comparative performance against conventional yoga mats.

The urethane-filled Fuwari Tatami begins with a 770-by-490-millimeter Single, weighing about 0.7 kilogram and costing ¥4,400. It does not fold. The ¥7,700 Double opens to 770 by 900 millimeters, weighs about 1.5 kilograms and folds to 770 by 450 by 17 millimeters. The ¥16,500 Force model opens to 770 by 1,880 millimeters, weighs about 3 kilograms and folds into a 770-by-490-by-35-millimeter stack.

The release says the cushioned mats reduce the effect of uneven ground and cold. That should not be read as an engineering rating. No R-value, waterproof or water-resistance grade, wet-ground durability test, flammability result or backing-slip specification was supplied. Nine millimeters of urethane can change comfort, but the release does not establish equivalence to a cold-weather camping pad. A product that moves beyond the protected interior needs a modern test sheet as much as it needs a credible craft story.

AGURA’s interesting claim is not that it invented portable tatami. It gives a portable tatami two newly edited periods of use: the yoga session and the outdoor stay.

From a Nishikyo workshop to state hospitality and Expo 2025

Sawabe Tatami Co. is based in Yamada Rokunotsubocho in western Kyoto and appears in the Kyoto Tatami Commerce and Industry Cooperative’s membership directory. Its official site displays the traditional phrase “purveyor to the Imperial Household Agency.” Its launch materials cite more than 60 years in business, a Kyoto Prefecture master-craftsman distinction, work at the Kyoto State Guest House, a circular tatami installation in Malta’s pavilion at the Osaka-Kansai Expo, and multiple nationally certified first-class tatami makers. These are company claims; the public materials reviewed for this report do not document the scope of every commission or contractual relationship. They nevertheless place the launch within a workshop practice extending from residential resurfacing to exacting custom work.

Kyoto supplies more than a picturesque address. The city’s tatami cooperative traces its predecessor to the Kyoto Tatami Workers Association founded in 1895. It opened a vocational training school in 1953, and “Kyo-tatami” became a Kyoto-designated craft in 2006. The cooperative says hand-sewing skills survive in Kyoto even as mechanized production has spread. Kyoto Prefecture’s “Contemporary Master Craftsman” program also evaluates not only exceptional ability but contribution to an industry and fitness as a model for others. A craft survives when the procedure can be repeated by the next set of hands, not merely when a finished object is preserved.

The name AGURA pulls attention back to the body. Agura is the relaxed, cross-legged position taken on the floor, traditionally more informal than kneeling in seiza. The brand is named not for a room or floor covering, but for what a person does upon it. It proposes to sell a period of sitting rather than a permanent interior.

The Shosoin mat: 1,300 years ago, tatami was placed

The Shosoin repository in Nara preserves remains of the Gosho no Tatami, a furnishing associated with Emperor Shomu in the eighth century. It is understood as bedding or a surface for repose placed on a wooden platform. Layers resembling woven straw matting were covered and finished with a brocade border. It is regularly described as the oldest surviving example—or among the oldest surviving evidence—of the thick form that developed into tatami.

The timing gives AGURA an unexpected historical companion. The 48th issue of the Bulletin of the Office of the Shosoin Treasure House, published in March 2026, reported that the old mat’s dimensions and color may have followed prescriptions in the Buddhist monastic code known as the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya. Shomu was also an ordained Buddhist. A movable piece of bedding may therefore encode both physical comfort and an ideal of disciplined restraint.

Ancient Japanese buildings did not begin with today’s wall-to-wall tatami floor. Woven surfaces were carried to where someone would sit, sleep or occupy a ceremonial center. The linguistic connection between tatami and folding or stacking retains that mobility. Even as thin matting became a multilayered, bordered furnishing, it was something placed rather than a room’s permanent skin.

In the Heian period’s aristocratic shinden-zukuri residences, furniture, screens, curtains, cushions and tatami organized large wooden-floored interiors when needed. Thickness and border designs were associated with rank. A mat did not create an equal floor for everyone. It identified who possessed the right to sit in a particular position. The modern owner carries a personal surface by choice; the ancient mat carried social order.

How the movable mat became a room

That relationship changed through medieval architecture. The shoin style grew from studies in Zen monasteries and developed rooms with an alcove, shelves, writing space, sliding doors and tatami covering the floor. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s reconstructed shoin room, modeled on a guest residence built around 1600, combines tatami, painted sliding doors and a large tokonoma. The museum calls its proportions the culmination of two centuries of interior development.

Once tatami covered the entire floor, the building began to obey the mat. Its approximately two-to-one rectangle assembled rooms of four and a half, six or eight mats. It influenced bay spacing, doors, alcoves and the scale of interior movement. Japanese rooms are still described in jo—mat units—even when they contain no tatami. An object became a planning grid.

Tea practice wrote bodily behavior onto that geometry. The positions of the hearth mat, host’s mat, guest mats and mat for an honored visitor govern footsteps, the placement of utensils and distance between people. The familiar etiquette of avoiding the fabric border also teaches the body to register boundaries. AGURA removes those fixed coordinates and carries one surface outward. A tea room makes the body adapt to a mapped room; a portable mat makes the surface follow the body.

Kyoto mats are larger—and no size is universal

Tatami has no single national dimension. A Kyoto-size kyoma or honma mat is approximately 955 by 1,910 millimeters. The Edoma common in Tokyo and eastern Japan is about 880 by 1,760 millimeters; Chukyoma is around 910 by 1,820; the smaller danchima associated with apartment construction is about 850 by 1,700. These are conventions, not substitutes for measurement. Traditional makers fit mats to walls, columns and the small irregularities of an actual room.

AGURA’s 1,880-millimeter yoga mat approaches the length of a Kyoto mat but is only 660 millimeters wide and 3 millimeters thick. The Force carries the same length with a width of 770 millimeters and thickness of 9. It is better understood as translating the reclining length of a Kyoto mat than copying kyoma. Preserving a design tradition does not mean freezing its measurements. It means understanding why a proportion accommodated bodies and buildings, then translating the reason into new constraints.

Surface, core and edge: three systems in one mat

A conventional tatami is a relationship among three components. The tatami-omote is the visible surface, woven by passing rush around warp threads. The tatami-doko core was traditionally made by compressing and stitching layers of rice straw; modern cores commonly combine wood-fiber board and foamed plastics to reduce weight and manage performance. The tatami-beri protects the long edges and carries color, pattern and status. Borderless tatami deliberately modifies that arrangement rather than escaping construction entirely.

Craftsmanship involves more than cutting a standard rectangle. A maker surveys the room, reads the weave, cuts the core to prevent gaps or lifted corners, tensions the surface, sews a straight edge and coordinates the direction and appearance of multiple mats. A portable product adds a new set of failures: joints repeatedly flex, a lifted mat sags, the backing slides, grit abrades the surface and condensation reaches parts that normally live in a ventilated interior. The engineering problem shifts from architectural fit to tool-like endurance.

Sawabe says craftspeople finish the mats individually. The release does not identify the origin of its natural rush, the people who weave the surface, the warp specification, urethane density, backing material, edge construction or repair method. For customers attracted by cultural continuity, who performs each stage can matter more than a logo.

Inside igusa is a network of tiny spaces

Soft rush looks like a simple green stem. Its interior contains a spongy tissue of star-shaped cells, creating a porous structure that holds air and moisture. That structure underlies its ability to absorb and release water vapor and adsorb some odor-causing compounds. Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture explains that rush for tatami is harvested in early summer, coated with natural clay in a mud-dyeing step and dried. The treatment contributes to the characteristic color, aroma and luster while helping the stems dry evenly.

Material behavior is not the same as a proven health outcome in a finished product. A 2025 study in the journal Indoor Environment found antibacterial activity against organisms including Legionella pneumophila and E. coli, but no antifungal effect against Aspergillus and Rhizopus species. Sawabe advertises humidity moderation, deodorizing, antibacterial action and a relaxing fragrance. It did not publish an independent test of AGURA, the amount of rush exposed, room volume, duration or control material. “Rush has measurable properties” and “this mat improves health” are different claims.

A natural, absorbent surface also requires care. Rolled or folded while damp, moisture retention can become a condition for mold. Sunlight gradually changes fresh green rush toward gold; repeated abrasion raises and breaks fibers. Aging color can be desirable. It does not make the material indifferent to rain, soil or overnight condensation.

“Washi tatami” belongs to industrial material history, too

AGURA will pair natural rush with a black paper-based tatami surface. The English shorthand “washi” can mislead. A major commercial example from DAIKEN is not a sheet of handmade mulberry paper placed on the floor. The company identifies machine-made paper that is processed, protected against staining and woven into a tatami surface. Such materials can offer stable color, easier wiping and a wider palette than natural rush.

The AGURA announcement does not identify its supplier, coating system, water resistance or abrasion results. Performance data for another company’s paper-based tatami cannot be transferred to this one. Choosing natural rush or an engineered paper surface is also not a moral contest between authentic and false. It can be a practical choice between fragrance and changing color on one side, and color stability, cleanup and outdoor handling on the other.

Japan’s domestic rush base is shrinking fast

The need for new uses is visible in agricultural statistics. The Ministry of Agriculture says nearly all domestically grown tatami rush now comes from Kumamoto Prefecture. Its 2025 planted area was 242 hectares, down 24% in one year. Harvest fell 27% to 3,630 metric tons. Production from July 2024 through June 2025 totaled 1.03 million tatami surfaces, also down 27%. The government cited growers leaving production amid an aging workforce, labor shortages and higher costs.

In the 2023 crop year, Kumamoto still reported 351 hectares and 1.54 million surfaces. The two-year comparison implies declines of about 31% in planted area and 33% in output. Westernized housing, imported material and engineered paper or resin surfaces interact with the loss of the dedicated tatami room. The contraction reaches beyond the workshop to the people who raise seedlings, transplant, harvest, mud-dye, sort and weave rush.

That is why the cultural value of a portable mat cannot be counted only in units sold. Does it use domestic rush? Does it identify the grower and weaver? Can the surface be replaced after wear? Can a hinge or urethane panel be repaired separately? Does enough of the price return to skilled labor? AGURA’s announcement does not yet provide the material origin or a repair program. A project that describes cultural succession as its mission will eventually need supply-chain transparency.

Culture survives not only when an old shape enters a glass case. It survives when the grower, weaver and maker receive the next paid order.

AGURA did not invent portable tatami

Placeable, modular and folding tatami already exist. Takaokaya, a Kyoto bedding and furnishings maker established in 1919, sells a tri-fold mat made with Kyushu-grown rush and polyester filling. Its single size is 100 by 210 centimeters, 17 millimeters thick and about 3 kilograms. Kyoto company Millieme offers a portable 955-by-1,910-millimeter mat matching the kyoma convention at 15 millimeters thick. Oshima-ya sells an 82-centimeter-square, 15-millimeter-thick bi-fold rush mat weighing about 1.3 kilograms.

Those precedents do not diminish AGURA. They reveal portability as a wider adaptation across the tatami trade. AGURA’s distinction is editorial: a 660-millimeter yoga roll and a 770-millimeter outdoor folding system are joined by one posture-centered identity. It should be judged not as a world first, but as a particular answer to where artisan-made tatami might meet contemporary markets.

Questions to ask before taking it camping

A practical buyer’s checklist
  • Surface origin: Is the natural rush grown in Japan or imported, and where and by whom is the surface woven?
  • Water: Is there a water-resistance treatment, what is the drying procedure after rain or condensation, and what does the warranty exclude?
  • Insulation: Is there an R-value or a temperature-specific test behind the phrase about reducing cold?
  • Grip: How do the surface and backing behave on wood, a tent floor and vehicle fabric, dry and damp?
  • Fold life: How many cycles were tested, how are joints and edges reinforced, and can the seam be repaired?
  • Fire and heat: Is it rated for use near a heater, heated blanket or campfire? Do not assume flame resistance.
  • Repair: Can the surface, edge, joint or individual cushion be replaced, and what will repair and shipping cost?
  • Storage: Remove grit, clean along the weave and dry completely in shade before rolling or folding.

A groundsheet is prudent beneath natural rush on damp or abrasive earth. Spills should be absorbed promptly, without harsh rubbing, and the mat dried in moving air away from hard sunlight. In a vehicle, a sleeping body can create condensation against the cold floor. The mat should be lifted and dried underneath in the morning. Portability does not eliminate maintenance; it exposes the object to more kinds of moisture and dirt.

A natural surface does not settle the environmental case

Rush is a renewable crop, and a long-lived domestic surface with repairable parts can support regional farming and a maintenance economy. But the footprint of the whole product also includes urethane, backing, thread, adhesives, treatments on paper material, transport distance, usable life and whether components can be separated at disposal. Sawabe has not published a lifecycle assessment or take-back scheme for AGURA.

The most sustainable product is not necessarily the one with the largest word “natural” on its label. It is often the one used for a long time, repaired by replacing only what fails, and explicit about where its components begin and end. Architectural tatami historically participates in such a maintenance logic: a surface can be reversed, replaced and fitted over a continuing core. A portable tatami can inherit that principle if replacement parts and repair prices are designed from the start.

From room to time—and back to the beginning

Sawabe describes its purpose as freeing tatami from the constraint of being washitsu flooring and letting it accompany moments in daily life. The line is persuasive because it echoes the history. Ancient tatami appeared for a time of sitting, sleeping or ceremony, not as an uninterrupted architectural field. Medieval Japan turned it into a fixed surface that measured the room. AGURA proposes a surface that appears only for the time it is needed.

Its success will depend on more than whether the smell of rush feels beautiful at a campsite. The 3-millimeter surface must survive yoga friction; the 9-millimeter joints must endure years of folding; the product must be safe when damp; and enough value must return to growers and skilled makers. The authority of tradition is not a substitute for performance data. But if testing, traceability and a repair system are added to workshop technique, a portable mat can become more than a Japanese-style lifestyle accessory.

Over centuries, tatami changed from movable bedding to floor, from an emblem of rank to a unit of everyday space. Now the floor has acquired a fold again. AGURA does not open a miniature washitsu. It opens a fragment of architecture wherever a body pauses. Taking tatami beyond the room may turn out to be a journey back to the place where tatami began.
