Halloween’s scheduled game disappeared—after three extra-inning thrillers helped produce a four-game sweep.

The Halloween game that will not happen

Yokohama Stadium was supposed to stage Game 6 of the 2026 Japan Series on Saturday, October 31, at 6:30 p.m. It will not. On October 28, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks completed a four-game sweep of the Yokohama DeNA BayStars with a 4–2 win in Fukuoka. Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) confirms the championship is over: SoftBank has won a second consecutive national title and the 13th in the franchise’s history. It would be misleading to promote the original Halloween fixture as an upcoming game.

A sweep that concealed four tense nights

SoftBank won the games 3–1, 4–3, 2–1 and 4–2. Those results suggest dominance, but the contest was unusually compressed: NPB says each of the first three games went into extra innings, the first time a Japan Series had ever opened with three consecutive extra-inning contests. A 4–0 series margin therefore tells only part of the story. The Hawks managed the decisive moments more consistently; they did not simply cruise through four blowouts.

The fourth game turned in one inning

DeNA began Game 4 with a two-run home run by Keita Sano. For a moment, an extended series still seemed possible. In the fourth inning, however, catcher Yudai Yamamoto drove in two runs with a triple. Yuki Yanagita then delivered the go-ahead hit. Yamamoto added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Kazuki Sugiyama retired the side in order in the ninth, finishing the 4–2 game. That combination of timely offense and bullpen control was the series in miniature.

Tomoya Masaki and the swing that changed Game 3

Outfielder Tomoya Masaki earned the series Most Valuable Player award. NPB lists seven hits in 16 at-bats, a .438 average, two home runs and two RBIs. His solo homer in the bottom of the tenth ended Game 3, giving the Hawks their third win and eliminating nearly all room for a DeNA comeback. The award rewards his conspicuous contribution; it does not mean every decisive play came from the MVP.

A historically unusual bullpen championship

The winning pitchers in the four games were Roberto Osuna, Darwinzon Hernandez, Kazuki Sugiyama and Hernandez again. None was the starting pitcher. Nikkan Sports identifies SoftBank as the first team to sweep a Japan Series from the outset with all four winning decisions credited to relievers. That statistical distinction does not render the starters irrelevant. It illustrates how modern playoff games can be constructed over nine or more innings by a full pitching staff, with official winning decisions falling to the late-game arms.

2024: the same clubs, the opposite four-game run

Two years earlier, the BayStars authored one of the great reversals in this rivalry. SoftBank won the first two games of the 2024 Japan Series, only for DeNA to win the next four and claim its first title in 26 years. NPB’s historical record confirms the sequence. The 2026 sweep makes a powerful historical contrast: this time the Hawks never surrendered a game. It is fair to call the result a reversal of fortunes; it is not necessary to invent revenge statements or psychological motivations.

A franchise older than its corporate name

The phrase “13th title” needs context for readers outside Japan. The Hawks’ lineage predates the SoftBank era, running through the Nankai Hawks and the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks. In its October 28 announcement, the club also celebrated three consecutive league pennants—the first such run since 1966 in its longer history and the first since moving to Fukuoka. Professional baseball in Japan is both a sport and a century-spanning story of companies, cities and regional identities.

Catching, run production and honors beyond the MVP

Yamamoto’s three RBIs in the deciding game made him one of the defining players of the clincher. NPB named Yamamoto, Sugiyama and Yudai Shoji its outstanding players, while DeNA pitcher Katsuki Azuma received the fighting-spirit award. These distinctions matter because a championship game is not only a batting-highlight reel. Run prevention, defensive decisions, baserunning and the distribution of high-pressure work all shape the final score.

What a best-of-seven schedule actually means

The Japan Series is a first-to-four-wins competition, not a guaranteed seven-game event. Before the teams played, NPB scheduled Game 5 for October 29 in Fukuoka, Game 6 for October 31 in Yokohama and Game 7 for November 1 in Yokohama. Once the Hawks took a fourth victory on October 28, those remaining games were unnecessary. Old fixture listings may still surface online, but they should not be treated as a confirmation that a game is taking place.

Tickets and the practical consequences

For fans holding admissions to an unplayed Yokohama game, NPB’s ticket terms specify refund windows beginning November 2 for many ticket types, with a different November 6–20 window for Lawson electronic tickets. The terms and procedures vary by sales channel, and buyers should consult the original seller. A refunded ticket is not proof that transportation, hotels or other trip expenses will also be reimbursed. The distinction is especially important to supporters who made Halloween-weekend travel plans.

A home celebration that mattered to the manager

Manager Hiroki Kokubo described lifting the trophy at the Hawks’ own Mizuho PayPay Dome in Fukuoka as an objective that had taken three years to realize. The title brings a powerful home-city moment to Fukuoka even as it removes a major Saturday-night event from Yokohama’s calendar. A sporting result can produce both celebration and disappointment without anyone needing to sensationalize the contrast.

What the four-game result really says

A sweep is definitive in the standings, yet these games show how thin the distance between a close contest and a lopsided series can be. Three extra-inning games, Masaki’s tenth-inning homer, Yamamoto’s fourth-inning triple in Game 4 and a bullpen that collected every winning decision turned four difficult nights into four consecutive victories. Yokohama will not host a Halloween championship game in 2026. The more enduring story is how SoftBank repeatedly found its advantage in the moments when the game could still swing.
