Tokyo Holds Above 70,000 After Monday’s 2.4% Surge as AI and 3% JGBs Share the Stage
Tokyo surged Monday on AI and semiconductor strength and remained above 70,000 Tuesday morning. But 3%-plus JGB yields and record long-bond borrowing costs mean equity optimism is sharing the stage with a serious fiscal and rates story.
01 Market Snapshot
Data checked: 2026-10-06 12:00 JST / 2026-10-05 20:00 California time (PDT). October 5 values are final closes. October 6 cash equities are in the lunch break. Reuters had the Nikkei up 0.7% at 10:48 JST; a later public quote showed 70,251.44, about 0.4% higher. Because timestamps differ, neither is labeled the 11:30 first-half close.
02 What Moved Tokyo
Monday’s rally began with weaker U.S. jobs data, which sharply reduced the odds of an October Fed hike and sent money back toward global AI and semiconductor shares. The Nikkei closed up 2.40% at 69,946.86; TOPIX gained 1.33%.
This was not simply a weak-yen move. USD/JPY stayed in the high 157s. High-weight AI names—especially Advantest, Tokyo Electron and SoftBank Group—did a large share of the index work, while banks also rose as 3%-plus JGB yields supported margin expectations.
Tuesday morning extended the move after another record Nasdaq close, Nvidia strength and lower oil, but at a more restrained pace after Monday’s jump.

Advantest (6857) — AI test demand keeps doing outsized index work
Advantest rose 4.32% on October 5, while Tokyo Electron gained 5.5%. A freely accessible Tuesday morning quote also showed Advantest about 2% higher.
This is less a one-company story than Japan’s expression of the global AI-chip bid. It helps explain why the Nikkei can look much stronger than the broader market when a small number of high-weight names surge.
Confidence: High04 Sector Pulse
05 Yen Watch
USD/JPY was around 157.66 near Monday’s Tokyo close and about 157.9 Tuesday morning. That is continued yen weakness rather than a fresh currency shock.
The level still helps exporters’ translated earnings while raising import costs. Lower crude is cushioning part of the pressure. A decisive move toward 160 would quickly revive intervention risk and the household-inflation debate.
06 Rates / JGB Watch
The 10-year JGB yield ended Monday around 3.09%, close to three-decade highs. The 30-year yield briefly reached a record 4.235% as investors tested the fiscal implications of the Takaichi government’s spending and tax-cut plans.
Tuesday morning the 10-year yield was around 3.105%. The Ministry of Finance opened a new 10-year auction with a 3.1% coupon and about ¥2.6 trillion planned issuance. Bids closed at 11:50 JST; at noon the result was not yet public, so this report does not speculate on it.
07 Global Handoff
After Tokyo closed Monday, the S&P 500 rose 0.66% and the Nasdaq gained 1.05% to a record close. Nvidia added 2.1%.
The contradiction is that U.S. long yields remain high: the 10-year Treasury briefly reached 5.3493%, the highest since 2002. AI optimism is coexisting with bond-market concern over inflation, deficits and term premium. Brent crude fell 1.9% overnight to around $100, a modest positive for energy-importing Japan.
08 Policy / BOJ Watch
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi used her October 5 policy speech to promise that government-bond issuance would be controlled appropriately while growth investment continues. With 30-year yields at records, the credibility test is occurring in the bond market.
The BOJ raised its policy rate to 1.25% in September; its next meeting is October 29–30. Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida has argued that the AI boom could affect demand, productivity and the natural rate of interest, linking the equity market’s biggest theme directly to monetary policy.
09 Publisher’s Market Note
Seventy thousand is a powerful headline. The better question is who built it.
On Monday, semiconductors did enormous work. On Tuesday, that story continues—but banks are also benefiting from a Japan in which 3% JGB yields are no longer theoretical. AI and higher domestic rates now sit on the same screen.
