After Thursday’s chip surge, Tokyo pulls back as inflation, oil and rates return to focus

Tokyo’s October 1 rally was powered by AI and semiconductor shares after Micron’s strong results, lifting the Nikkei 3.30%. By Friday morning, profit-taking, a firmer yen, elevated oil and bond-market volatility had pushed the index about 1% lower, while a hotter Tokyo CPI revived the BOJ tightening debate.

Tokyo stocks surged on October 1 as AI-semiconductor shares dominated the index, while Friday morning’s pullback and stronger inflation data shifted attention back to the yen, rates and the U.S. jobs report before the next open.

Mood: Thursday was an unusually concentrated AI-chip rally. Friday morning looked more like profit-taking plus macro caution. The Nikkei’s headline move still overstates the breadth of the Japanese equity market.

02What Moved Tokyo

October 1 belonged to semiconductors. Micron’s strong earnings and outlook revived confidence in AI data-center memory demand and capital spending, sending money into Advantest, Tokyo Electron, Kioxia and related names. The Nikkei jumped 3.30%, but TOPIX rose only 0.57%. On the Prime Market, 750 stocks advanced and 747 declined.

That was not a broad “everything in Japan is rising” session. High-priced AI and semiconductor constituents did an outsized share of the index work. Friday morning brought the predictable test: profit-taking after a two-day surge, a modestly firmer yen, high crude prices and still-elevated global yields all worked against the previous day’s momentum.

03Today’s Market Mover

Advantest (6857) — AI semiconductor testing

Advantest closed October 1 at ¥37,610, up ¥3,350 or 9.78%. Its weight in the Nikkei meant the move accounted for a substantial portion of the index’s 2,203-point gain. Micron’s results strengthened the view that AI memory demand remains powerful, and rising chip complexity and production volumes can translate into greater demand for semiconductor test equipment.

The move matters beyond one company. It captures Tokyo’s current AI-capex chain: memory, fabrication equipment, test, data-center connectivity and electrical infrastructure. Friday’s pullback is a reminder that the durability of that trade should be judged not only by the Nikkei, but by TOPIX and market breadth.

Confidence: High

04Sector Pulse

Strong on October 1: electrical equipment, precision instruments, semiconductor equipment, memory and AI-data-center-linked nonferrous names. Only 11 of the TSE’s 33 industry groups rose, underlining how narrow the rally was beneath the headline index.

Under pressure: banks, insurers and petroleum-related shares were weak Thursday. Friday morning public reporting pointed to profit-taking in technology, autos and pharmaceuticals, including declines in SoftBank Group, Honda Motor and Chugai Pharmaceutical.

05Yen Watch

USD/JPY moved into the 158s during Thursday’s Tokyo session, supporting exporters. By Friday morning the yen had firmed to around 157.81 per dollar. A stronger yen can reduce the translated value of overseas earnings for autos and electronics, while lowering the yen cost of imported energy, food and raw materials.

Friday’s inflation report makes the currency story more than an exporter story. If hotter inflation brings forward BOJ tightening expectations, yen support can emerge even when the dollar remains firm globally.

06Rates / JGB Watch

Public market data put the 10-year JGB yield around 3.09% late Thursday. Friday morning, JGB prices rose with U.S. Treasurys and the 10-year yield eased to roughly 3.05%. That is a daily decline, but it still leaves Japanese long rates in a very different regime from the ultra-low-yield years.

Higher yields can help bank and insurance margins while pressuring rate-sensitive real estate and expensive growth stocks. Tokyo CPI’s upside surprise keeps the medium-term BOJ tightening question alive even as bonds rallied in the morning.

07Global Handoff

U.S. equities finished October 1 modestly higher: the S&P 500 gained 0.19%, the Nasdaq 0.04% and the Dow 0.04%. Semiconductor shares remained relatively firm after Micron, but the bigger cross-asset story was bonds: the U.S. 10-year yield briefly reached about 5.34% before easing back toward the 5.2% area.

Oil is another Japan-specific risk. WTI was around $92 a barrel and Brent above $100 in public reporting. For an energy-importing economy, that feeds directly into corporate costs and household inflation. The U.S. payroll report later Friday is therefore a two-channel event for Japan: it can move both Treasury yields and USD/JPY before Monday’s Tokyo open.

08Policy / BOJ Watch

Tokyo’s September CPI, released at 8:30 a.m. Friday, showed headline inflation at 2.7% year on year, core CPI excluding fresh food at 2.7%, and the measure excluding fresh food and energy at 3.0%. Core inflation accelerated sharply from 1.8% in August and beat the market consensus reported ahead of the release.

Part of the jump reflects base effects from prior childcare and water-fee relief, but underlying price pressure also strengthened. The August unemployment rate was 2.5%, leaving no obvious labor-market deterioration that would force the BOJ to abandon normalization. The October 29-30 BOJ meeting remains an important checkpoint.

09Publisher’s Market Note

The Nikkei’s huge Thursday gain can make Japan look stronger than the market underneath it. TOPIX and breadth tell a more selective story. Japan’s emerging market narrative is not just “AI.” It is the chain connecting AI to memory, test equipment, power, optical cable, factory investment, interest rates and the yen. Following that chain may tell us more about Japan’s economy than the index headline alone.

10Before the Next Open

  • U.S. September payrolls: whether Treasury yields resume their rise or extend Friday’s retreat.
  • USD/JPY: whether the pair holds the 157s or returns to the 158s after the jobs report.
  • Semiconductor breadth: whether buying extends beyond Advantest, Tokyo Electron and Kioxia into the broader market.
  • Oil: whether Brent holds above $100, a direct inflation and margin issue for Japan.
  • JGBs: whether the 10-year stays near 3% and restores the familiar banks-up/growth-down rate trade.
