Nikkei Extends a Chip-Led Rebound While TOPIX Lags — Sept. 30 Close + Oct. 1 Midsession

Japan Market Desk: After Tokyo, Before the Next Open

Tokyo stocks rebounded sharply on September 30 as AI and semiconductor shares led, while October 1 opened with the Nikkei extending gains but TOPIX slipping; a softer yen, 3% JGB yields and the new BOJ Tankan now frame the afternoon.

An independently verifiable free public source for the exact 11:30 a.m. October 1 index close was not available at this cutoff, so the report uses verified opening prints and timestamped public morning stock, FX and bond readings rather than inserting an unverified midday index number.

What Moved Tokyo

September 30 reversed much of the prior day's broad selloff. The Nikkei rose 1.94% and TOPIX gained 1.67%; 206 Nikkei constituents advanced and only 18 fell. On October 1, Micron's strong results and guidance kept buying interest focused on Kioxia, Advantest and Tokyo Electron. But the open split: the Nikkei rose while TOPIX fell, highlighting the outsized index influence of high-weight technology.

Today’s Market Mover

Tokyo Electron traded at ¥12,040 at a public 9:41 a.m. quote, up 1.90%, alongside gains in Kioxia, Advantest, Lasertec and Disco. Micron's results and forward guidance reinforced the AI data-center memory-demand story. Confidence: High on the price action and sector move; no single headline is treated as the sole cause.

Sector Pulse

Stronger

Semiconductor equipment, memory and AI data-center exposure.

Weaker

Parts of financials; TOPIX lag shows the breadth gap.

Technical note

Many large-cap stock splits took effect Oct. 1; displayed prices are split-adjusted.

Yen Watch

USD/JPY rose from the ¥157.30s early in Tokyo to about ¥157.91 at 10 a.m. and later touched ¥158.13. The Tankan's FY2026 corporate planning rate was revised to ¥154.23, leaving spot several yen weaker than corporate assumptions. That can help exporters while raising imported energy, food and materials costs.

Rates / JGB Watch

The 10-year JGB ended September 30 at 3.065%. A public October 1 morning reading showed about 3.051%, slightly lower on the day but still firmly in the new 3% regime. The Tankan supported the case for further BOJ tightening without giving a one-way signal for rapid acceleration.

Global Handoff

Europe had not yet opened by the noon Tokyo cutoff. On September 30, the S&P 500 fell 0.3% to 7,651.54, the Dow lost 0.9% to 50,906.05 and the Nasdaq gained 0.2% to 26,861.06. High yields restrained broad equities while technology remained comparatively resilient, helping frame Tokyo's semiconductor-led morning.

Policy / BOJ Watch

The September Tankan put the large-manufacturer DI at 24, up from 22, while large nonmanufacturers eased to 35 from 37. Conditions across all firms and industries improved to 21 from 18, but the December forecast fell to 15. Markets are therefore weighing continued tightening against a less uniform forward picture.

Publisher’s Market Note

The interesting thing today is not simply that Japan stocks are up. The Nikkei and TOPIX are telling different stories. AI prices global growth investment; banks price rates; the yen means one thing for exporters and another for households. Tokyo is increasingly a market where several versions of Japan are being priced at once.

Before the Next Open

  • Whether afternoon breadth catches up with the Nikkei's semiconductor-led rise.
  • Whether USD/JPY holds above ¥158 and whether MOF language hardens.
  • Whether the 10-year JGB stabilizes around 3.05%.
  • Whether Tokyo Electron, Kioxia and Advantest hold morning gains.
  • How the next U.S. labor and inflation data move Treasury yields and Nasdaq.
