Tokyo stocks rose as Friday’s U.S. gains and renewed buying in AI and semiconductor names supported risk appetite, while a firmer yen and 10-year JGB yields around 3.1% shaped the setup for the afternoon session.

What Moved Tokyo
Monday inherited Friday’s Wall Street rebound. The Dow rose 0.93%, the S&P 500 0.51% and the Nasdaq 0.48%. Lower oil and softer U.S. long-term yields helped sentiment, while semiconductor and electronics shares carried the move into Tokyo.
The rise was not one-way. The Nikkei reached 66,897.60 at 9:15, up 533.40 points, then eased to 66,657.73 by 10:00. After five straight gains through Friday, profit-taking was natural. A firmer yen also removed part of the usual exporter tailwind.
Today’s Market Mover
SoftBank Group (9984) Confidence: Medium
An early public quote around 9:23 showed SoftBank Group at ¥6,397, up 4.01%. Advantest, Disco and Taiyo Yuden were also higher. No new company-specific catalyst was independently verified, so the move is best read as part of broader AI and technology risk appetite following Friday’s U.S. gains.
Sector Pulse
Semiconductors and electronic components led, but glass and ceramics, textiles and steel also ranked among stronger groups. At 10:00, both the Nikkei and TOPIX were up about 0.44%, suggesting broader participation than a pure heavyweight-tech move.
Yen Watch
USD/JPY was ¥157.80–81 at 10:00. Kyodo linked yen buying to sensitivity around Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama’s September 25 online meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and concern over excessive yen weakness. A firmer yen helps import costs but reduces part of the earnings translation benefit for exporters.
Rates / JGB Watch
The benchmark 10-year JGB yield was around 3.09%–3.10% in public morning data. That level can support bank and insurance earnings expectations while raising the cost of capital for REITs, property and highly leveraged businesses. Monday’s rally is therefore happening alongside, not because of, easy domestic financial conditions.
Global Handoff
At 12:15 JST, Europe had not opened and the U.S. cash session was still hours away. The relevant handoff is Friday’s overseas close into Monday Tokyo: S&P 500 7,743.41 (+0.51%), Dow 51,828.62 (+0.93%), Nasdaq 27,068.72 (+0.48%). The afternoon will be driven more by domestic rates, the yen, dividend positioning and futures flows until Europe opens.
Policy / BOJ Watch
The Bank of Japan scheduled the minutes of its July 30–31 meeting for 8:50 a.m. September 28. They are backward-looking rather than a new policy decision, but they help show how policymakers framed inflation, wages, the yen and future tightening. The next major domestic checkpoint is the Tankan on October 1.
Publisher’s Market Note
The interesting part of Monday is that Tokyo is rising without the simple crutch of a weaker yen. The currency has firmed and long-term yields are already above 3%, yet AI-linked shares and parts of the materials complex are still attracting buyers. Japan’s equity story is becoming less about one macro trade and more about several overlapping ones: technology investment, higher rates, dividends, capital efficiency and the currency.
Before the Next Open
- Today’s close: whether the early rally survives profit-taking.
- USD/JPY: whether the yen strengthens materially beyond the high-157 area.
- 10-year JGB: whether the yield pushes decisively beyond 3.10%.
- September 29: 40-year JGB auction, RBA decision, U.S. JOLTS and consumer confidence.
- October 1: BOJ Tankan.
