Japan Market Desk: After Tokyo, Before the Next Open

Chips lift the Nikkei above 65,000 as a week of rate increases gives way to Japan’s long holiday

Tokyo stocks finished mixed as semiconductor buying lifted the Nikkei, while yen volatility and overseas interest rates shaped the setup before the next open.

Tokyo’s trading day, global handoff, and what to watch before the next session.

This is market journalism, not investment advice. Tokyo cash equities were closed on Saturday, September 19. This report reviews Friday’s session and the week, with a next-open setup.

What Moved Tokyo

The rally was selective. Traders Web reported 1,003 declining Prime-market shares against 511 advancers. Buying followed the previous U.S. session and strengthened after the BOJ announcement, with semiconductor shares prominent. Traders Web · Tokyo close ↗

A policy decision and the market’s response are separate questions. An anticipated change can remove uncertainty even while raising financing costs. The two benchmarks also weight companies differently. Their divergence warns against describing Friday as a vote of confidence from every part of corporate Japan. This is a reading of the market pattern, not proof that one announcement caused every trade.

Today’s Market Mover

Advantest (6857): the testing equipment behind the chip trade

Advantest closed at ¥32,050, up ¥1,810, or 5.99%. Its gain over the previous Friday was a much smaller 1.04%. A strong final session repaired earlier weakness; it did not mean the stock had risen steadily all week. Advantest · historical prices ↗

The company supplies semiconductor test systems. Designing and manufacturing a chip does not by itself establish that it performs as intended. Testing connects production with usable, reliable output. That makes equipment suppliers an important Japanese link in the investment chain behind computing infrastructure. 株式会社アドバンテスト ↗

The move fits the wider semiconductor rally. We have not established a company-specific order or earnings announcement as its cause. Confidence: Medium. The price move is clear; attributing it to a particular catalyst is less certain.

Sector Pulse

The closing report identified nonferrous metals, electric appliances and metal products among advancing industries; utilities, oil and coal, and fishery/agriculture declined. The three megabanks—MUFG, SMFG and Mizuho—also fell. Traders Web · Tokyo close ↗

Banks illustrate why a rate increase is not an automatic share-price catalyst. Higher loan yields may help income, but deposit costs, bond valuations and borrowers’ ability to repay matter too. For property and other domestic businesses, the relevant question is how financing costs interact with operating earnings. These are transmission channels to monitor, not quantified explanations of Friday’s sector returns.

Week in Review · September 14–18

For the week, the Nikkei gained 1.57% and TOPIX 1.56%. These are price-index changes from September 11 to September 18 closes, excluding dividends—not changes measured from Monday’s opening trade.

A weak start, followed by recovery

Monday’s Nikkei decline coincided with a TOPIX gain. Both fell Tuesday and advanced Wednesday and Thursday, before diverging again Friday. Similar weekly returns therefore conceal different paths. A reader looking only at the two Friday-to-Friday percentages would miss the changing balance within the market.

A week in which both central banks tightened

On September 16, the Federal Reserve raised its target range by a quarter point to 3.75–4.00%, unanimously. Its statement cited still-elevated inflation. Japan’s decision followed two days later. Federal Reserve · 2026-09-16 ↗

For Japan watchers, this was a relative-rates story. A domestic increase can support a currency in isolation, yet exchange rates also reflect the other country’s policy path. When both move, one rate decision cannot settle the currency outlook. Equities face a related tension: stronger growth expectations can coexist with a higher cost of funding them.

Two questions left open

Can semiconductor strength broaden into other industries? And can earnings absorb higher funding and imported-input costs? Those questions survive the weekly gain. At the reopening, participation across companies will be as informative as the headline level. This is the desk’s interpretation of the week, rather than a forecast that the recovery must continue.

Yen Watch

Reuters reported a dollar high of ¥158.05 before gains narrowed. Its 15:00 New York bid/ask was ¥156.66–156.71. The high and the timed quote are different observations; neither is a Tokyo cash-equity closing exchange rate. Reuters · New York FX ↗

For exporters, currency translation can lift the yen value of overseas revenue; for importers, a weaker yen can raise purchasing costs. Actual effects depend on hedges, invoice currencies and production locations. Shop prices move through contracts and inventories, so a late-session reversal in foreign exchange does not immediately reverse household inflation.

Rates / JGB Watch

The available Japan 10-year indication was 2.989%. Trading Economics identifies the series as an OTC yield, not an official exchange close. Its narrative also referred to roughly 2.95% at another point; we do not combine those observations into an asserted daily trading range. Trading Economics · Japan 10Y ↗

The overnight policy rate and a ten-year yield are different prices. Long yields reflect expectations about future policy and inflation, alongside supply and demand for bonds. An anticipated short-rate increase need not lift long yields on the announcement day. The effect on a household mortgage or factory investment also depends on maturity and whether borrowing is fixed or floating.

Public indications put the U.S. ten-year Treasury yield back around 5% on Friday. This is an indicative OTC observation, not a specified official close. With Japanese long yields near 3%, overseas bonds remain a competing destination for capital. A yen-based investor’s effective return also depends on currency hedging costs; subtracting two headline yields does not establish the return available in practice. Trading Economics · U.S. 10Y ↗

Global Handoff

After Tokyo closed, European equities weakened. Reuters’ closing summary put the STOXX Europe 600 down 1.11% and Germany’s DAX down 1.60%; the European benchmark lost 0.57% over the week. Japan’s weekly gain was not a uniform global pattern. Reuters · Europe close ↗

U.S. stocks closed mixed: the S&P 500 rose 0.2%, the Nasdaq Composite 0.4%, and the Dow fell 0.2%. AP’s weekly summary showed the S&P down 0.1%, Nasdaq up 0.7% and Dow down 1.7%. AP · U.S. close and week ↗

This weekend edition was checked after the U.S. close. Those outcomes arrived after Tokyo’s session and cannot explain trades already completed there. Overseas markets continue while Japanese cash equities are shut. Friday’s global closes are the starting point for the holiday watch, not a complete preview of Thursday’s opening.

Policy / BOJ Watch

The BOJ voted 7–2 to set its overnight call-rate target at around 1.25%, effective September 24. The announcement date and implementation date are distinct. 日本銀行 · 2026-09-18 ↗

August’s national CPI, released Friday, rose 1.9% year on year overall, 1.7% excluding fresh food, and 1.9% excluding both fresh food and energy. 総務省統計局 · 全国CPI ↗

One month’s CPI measures prices already observed. Policy also addresses how pressures may develop. Treating a below-2% reading as an automatic contradiction of tightening misses that difference in horizon. For households and businesses, the practical test is whether incomes and selling prices can keep pace with the obligations they must meet.

Publisher’s Market Note

There is a distance between a market screen and a neighbourhood shop. On a day when investors reward the machinery behind advanced chips, a small business is still calculating its next import bill and loan payment. Following Japan means watching both the technology connected to global demand and the cost of everyday operations. After the holiday, I want to see how widely the improvement reaches.

Before the Next Open

  • Cash equities reopen Thursday, September 24. September 21–23 are exchange holidays, following the weekend.
  • Track the yen and U.S. yields through the closure, separating timed quotes, official statements and implemented measures.
  • Watch U.S. semiconductor performance and whether Japanese equipment and component shares attract broader participation.
  • Observe implementation of the BOJ target and the response of banks and property shares; distinguish a rate change from its earnings consequences.
  • Follow energy prices and European demand conditions for their implications for import costs and exporters’ order books.
